Why Do People Pass Down Jewelry?

Why Do People Pass Down Jewelry?

When I was growing up, I used to look at all the bracelets, rings, and necklaces my own mother had in her jewelry box. I would try them on in the mirror and pose like I was a Hollywood star!

Now that I'm a mother myself, I begin to wonder what pieces I would want to give my children. A tiny piece of myself to leave behind for each of them. I know that their style will change along with their taste, so finding the perfect pieces may take some time, and be more meaningful.

Passing down jewelry from one generation to the next is a tradition that's been around for a long time. It's a symbol of love wrapped delicately in a beautiful piece of jewelry. A timeless ritual.

So what other reasons do people pass down jewelry?

Value.
When it comes to value, heirloom jewelry has both financial and sentimental value. There is the special memory of the person who gave it to you and an off chance it could be worth thousands, or not very much. Either way, it is a beautiful gesture from your loved one to you!

Big Life Events.
Special occasions like engagements and weddings are perfect moments to pass down jewelry. Oftentimes the women in the family gift their own engagement rings or wedding rings to the bride-to-be, giving it an even grander sentimental value.

Tradition.
Traditions are a great way of keeping the family close. It's a reminder of where we come from, our family history, and what deeply connects us to our loved ones. Heirloom jewelry teaches us to take care of what we value so we can give it to another important person in our life.
